Out here, far from anything that was ever home, two kinds of people grew apart over a single question.
When everything can be taken from you, what do you become?
The Verdant
They were knocked down once, hard, in a way that should have ended them. It didn't. They got up. That is the whole of who they are, and it is harder than it sounds. They do not pretend the loss never happened and they do not let it run their lives either. They remember it on purpose, because remembering is how you make sure it never wins twice. They protect each other with a fierceness that surprises people. Underestimate them and you will learn the same lesson everyone before you learned.
The Tanta
They were knocked down as well. They made a different choice. Never again, they decided, would they be at the mercy of anything, and they have built their entire world around keeping that promise. They are tired of being afraid, and they have found a way to never feel it again. The frightening part is how reasonable they sound. Listen long enough and you may catch yourself agreeing.
There is a weapon that can fold a whole world down into pure energy, enough to push an entire future forward. One of these two sides made it. The other will spend everything they have to answer it.
But the weapon is not the story. The people are. The two who lead these sides are bound by something older than the war, something neither will say out loud. One will be called a hero and one a villain. It depends who you ask.
